The Darmstadt Concert Choir’s main ethos and aim is to impart live and lively music. During intensive working phase leading up to a production the development of the expression of the music is paramount. The choir also works on entirely new ways of performing concertante works.
Recent productions of Orff’s "Carmina Burana", Handel’s "Belsazar" and Honegger’s "König David" have all been sensational. Thus the Darmstadt Concert Choir provides professional singers from all over Germany with yet another platform in addition to the more usual ones.
The choir regularly works together with the Darmstädter Hofkapelle (Darmstadt Court Orchestra). In recent years there has also been an increase in cooperations with well-known conductors and orchestras such as the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken, the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Bolschoi Orchestra Moscow, the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie [Young German Philharmonic] conducted by such famous names as Gary Bertini, Dennis Russell Davies, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Paolo Carignani, Alexander Lazarev, Leif Segerstam and Marcello Viotti.
The choir’s pursuit of musical excellence and their unstinting dedication led to the members of the Darmstadt Concert Choir winning first prize in the "large Choir" category of the internationally renowned "Let the peoples sing" choral competition 1988 organise by broadcasting copporations from all over the world. In 1990 the Darmstadt Concert Choir not only won first prize in the chamber choir category but was also awarded the legendary "Silver Rose Bowl" for being voted best choir of the competition. In July 1989 the Darmstadt Concert Choir was the very first choir to be invited to participate in the Lockenhauser Kammermusikfest that is under the musical leadership of the renowned violinist Gidon Kremer. From 1981 to 2000 the choir formed the operatic chorus fro the production sat the Schlossfestspiele Heidelberg. Even to this day members of the choir still participate in the festival. From 1993 to 2000 the choir hosted the Sommerspiele im Jagdschloss Kranichstein, an annual event that was founded by the choir.
In 2001 the Darmstadt Concert Choir founded the Darmstädter Residenzfestspiele. During the summer months the annual festival breathes life into some of the town’s most historic settings in an attempt to get across the idea that music is an expression of both the traditional and the contemporary. The choir takes an active part in a number of the performance staged during the festival.
Darmstadt Concert Choir is a member of the Verband deutscher Konzertchöre (VDKC) and the Arbeitskreis Musik in der Jugend (German Federation of Young-Choirs and Instrumental Groups) (AMJ)
